Pieter Bruegel the Elder, The Harvesters, 1565
Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525–1569) was a seminal figure in Dutch and Flemish Renaissance art, celebrated for his intricate landscapes and vivid depictions of peasant life. Born in Breda, Bruegel initially trained as a printmaker, but his talent for painting soon earned him widespread acclaim.
Bruegel's work is distinguished by its detailed and realistic portrayal of everyday scenes. His famous series of paintings depicting the seasons, such as "The Harvesters," offers a window into the rural life of the 16th century, capturing both the beauty and the toil of agrarian existence. His unique style combines a high viewpoint with meticulous detail, creating compositions that are both expansive and intimate.
Nicknamed "Peasant Bruegel," he had a profound impact on the art world, influencing many artists, including his own sons.
The Harvesters are on view in Gallery 613, The Met Museum, New York City.
The largest collection of Pieter Bruegel the Elder works is in Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien (Vienna, Austria).
